The Alchemist -- Paulo Coelho


The Alchemist I’m not sure much needs to be said about this. Most have already read it. It was basically a collection of motivational quotes threaded together into a story. I really liked how it combined the virtues of hard work and individual agency with the inevitability of destiny. I wasn’t so much of a fan of the crystal gazing theology. Thanks Kasen.

Mountains Beyond Mountains This is an engaging ethical argument presented as the true story of Dr. Paul Farmer and his humanitarian work for the people of Haiti and elsewhere. I love the sentiment the book portrays. It deeply connects the reader to the story of the downtrodden. The protagonist advocates in word and deed for humanitarianism on the basis of the ethics of care . I deeply disagree with him; I tend more towards utilitarianism when it comes to humanitarian efforts. That being said, I deeply appreciate an articulate and impassioned argument, which this certainly is. One point that is particularly well taken is how often the utilitarian view is used as a justification for immoral action. It does irritate me that he assumes that everyone who doesn’t think like him is evil and or lazy. Thanks for the recommendation Wil! Verdict: Read this , and then read Clay's  Prosperity Paradox  for contrast.

The old man and the sea — Ernest Hemingway — Recommend

  This is a short story. I believe the total run time is about 1.5 hours depending on your speed. It's not the best book I've ever read, but word for word, it's one of the most efficient injections of inspiration and thought-provoking material I've read this year. I won't bore you with a summary (which couldn't do it justice) nor will I pontificate with my analysis. But let me just highlight my three favorite points from the book. Grit. This is essentially a story about Grit. The Old Man (you never do learn his name) is a persistent fighter. You feel his pain, feel what he had to overcome the sweetness of victory and the exhaustion and meaning of defeat, but most of all the love of the fight. “But man is not made for defeat," he said. The death of expertise -- Tom Nichols -- Recommend with salt

I really thought I was going to hate this book, and at first, I did. Nichols' premise is that people trust experts less today than they did before. I haven't seen any proof of that, and I have seen some evidence to the contrary (2009 replication of Milgram's famous authority experiment). I thought the thesis was something along the lines of "trust experts" but it's more like. "Everybody's an idiot sometimes, here are some examples". Which is actually something I sympathize with quite a bit. For the first half of the book, Nichol's bashes on the self-educated, and the hobbyists. I wasn't a fan of this stuff. Yes, well-educated people tend to be right more often than the average hobbyist but the ratatouille doctrine actually holds up pretty well in this regard.
