Surprised by Joy -- C.S. Lewis


Surprised by Joy This book helped me live more conscientiously, to identify and embrace the things that I love deep down. Yesterday I was coming back from the store with my wife and kid in the backseat. The sun was setting and my wife was admiring it out the window but I was focused on driving. The rush of 5oClock commuters was as impatient and as brusque as ever. In a moment of decision, I tapped the breaks and slid into the most convenient parking lot. It happened to be a high school, the space created by the lot and accompanying football field allowed the full beauty of the giant orange and pink sunset to fill the windshield. We took 5 minutes to enjoy it and then head home, more refreshed than we'd been in a while. This book is a memoir of the early life of one of the great authors of all time. It provides a fascinating lens into his mind and what he considers important. It also gives a useful window into Europe before and after WWI.

  The book in a nutshell is captured by the subheading "why good people are divided by politics and religion". The book can be roughly divided into thirds. The first half of the book is about the origins of morality. Where did it come from? Haidt touches on some philosophical works and debates and ultimately concludes that morality provides evolutionary advantages, and it supersedes reason. He uses an elephant and a rider analogy, morality, roughly equated to emotion, is the elephant. He also uses a president and press secretary metaphor, which I found helpful, reason's primary function is to rationalize the conclusions of the subconscious. I'm not sure this story fully explains morality. Anna Karenina.- Leo Tolstoy -- Recomend

In my opinion, Lev Nikolayevich  Tolstoy  is one of the great authors of all time. In my  post  on my philosophy of reading, I distinguish between valuable and worthless fiction. A major piece of the distinction is how well the characters in the story imitate real human thought, action, and feeling. Tolstoy is a  master  at capturing thought and feeling in a way history never can. Anna Karenina isn't something that can be summed up or skimmed; you have to step into the pages and live the richly complex lives of each of the interwoven characters to extract the benefit of this masterpiece. I'll admit, the book is massive, it took me a month to get through it (normally I take 3-4 days per book). The journey is well worth the reward. I'm not going to try to even hit the main points of the book. The Gulag Archipelago — Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn — Highly Recommend

The first thing to note, I did the unimaginable and listened to the abridged version. Am I not hardcore enough for the full three volumes? In a word, no. This was still a 22-hour read and only demanded 1 audible credit though, so I feel somewhat justified. Moreover, this abridgment was authorized by Solzhenitsyn specifically for a western audience. This book is something like a blend between Dante's "Divine Comedy", Victor Frankl's " Man's search for meaning " and a 'from the belly of the beast' diagnosis of Marxism. I will depart from my usual short-form analysis because this book hasn't been treated with the attention it deserves. It's due a long-form summary and analysis. During his time in the gulag, Solzhenitsyn composed 10's of thousands of lines drawing from his own experience and the stories he exchanged with other prisoners.
